Arctic SnowHotel
Rovaniemi · Finland
Arctic SnowHotel is rebuilt each winter at Lehtojärvi outside Rovaniemi, a few kilometres inside the Arctic Circle. Walls, vaults, corridors and much of the furniture are cut from snow and ice, which means the building exists for a season and then returns to the lake and the forest.
Interior temperature holds steady a little below freezing regardless of the weather outside, so guests sleep in insulated bags on ice beds dressed with hides. Carved reliefs line the corridors, an ice bar and an ice chapel sit within the same structure, and glass-roofed cabins on the site offer a warm alternative for guests who want the aurora without the cold.
A sauna and warm service building sit alongside, which is not an afterthought but the reason the format works at all.
A note on this collection: the number of genuine ice hotels in the world is very small, and most rebuild under the same handful of names each winter. Rather than pad the page with properties that do not exist, this collection carries a single honest entry and leaves it there.
